1.d4 - A Classical Repertoire for White : Lubomir Ftacnik (Full DVD) | Chessbase Fritz Trainer
This DVD by Lubomir Ftacnik is an ambitious project, presenting a comprehensive set of ideas and structures in chess openings, arising after the first move 1.d4. In 34 videos (plus intro and conclusion) the author covers all 1.d4 openings - classical ones, like all Queen’s Gambit lines and the Indian defences, but also many interesting gambits, like the Benko, Blumenfeld and Budapest. The suggested choices are approved and active, but also safe for the first player. Many hours of explanations and suggestions will significantly shorten the time needed for building up a complete and workable set of opening weapons, usually called a repertoire.
Lubomir Ftacnik is a Slovak grandmaster, long term cooperator of ChessBase and dilligent analyst. For this DVD he has used his experience of three decades on the international chess scene. Just as they have done for many top players, the openings with 1.d4 have served him well throughout his active career. The lines against various defences have been forged in the fire of battles over the board. Learning more about the 1.d4 repertoire will bring any player a few steps closer to the coveted grandmaster level.

The name Sicilian Defence (1.e4 c5) describes a number of systems, each of which could easily be considered as an independent opening. Lubomir Ftacnik is a Slovak grandmaster with decades of experience on the international chess scene. As a younger member of the strong chess generation in the former Czechoslovakia (Hort, Smejkal, Kavalek, Jansa, Plachetka...) he helped to win silver at the Lucerne Chess Olympiad 1982 - 1. USSR 2. CSR 3. USA. With 14 Olympiads and 17 complete seasons in the German Bundesliga behind him, the Slovak player thrives on stability.

The Gruenfeld Defence - Lubomir Ftacnik ( Full DVD) | Chessbase Fritz Trainer
The Gruenfeld Defence (1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5) enjoys a special star status in the family of Indian openings. It involves a daring, active concept: fighting for control of the centre with an early d7-d5 thrust supported only by pieces. The ensuing lines and positions promise more active play than most openings. Black has to know the critical ideas and most promising plans as most lines are pretty sharp and concrete.
Many top players have tried to “refute” the Gruenfeld, honourably failed and ended up defending its charms with remarkable success. The opening is fully covered in 50 sections covering all lines of any importance. Two bonus sections discuss typical endgames - Black usually has equal or superior chances in Gruenfeld endings - as well as characteristic middlegame pawn structures. The DVD presents a repertoire - for each variation the author shows the best or most promising line for an amateur or tournament player. The games database gives the chance to understand more than 8000 Gruenfeld games played by the best players - 1300 of them deeply annotated. The majority of the notes are by Krasenkow and Ftacnik who have dilligently covered the opening in ChessBase Magazine for two decades.
