Anand-Topalov WCh, R4: Catalantastic Vishy!

anand topalov wcc

Wow, Anand just devastated Topalov with a knight sac and mating attack out of another Catalan. Yes, a knight sac and mating attack on move 25 out of a Catalan. Topalov may have to try an Indian Defense against the Indian if this keeps up. The world champion takes his first lead of the match. A really beautiful combination, with Black finding it impossible to prevent a white rook from lifting to the 4th rank, either Rc4 or Rd4, and delivering mate. Those watching the video said that Topalov offered a very limp handshake upon resigning on move 32, but to be fair it's hard to reach across the board when you've just had your head shoved up your rectum like that. Takes a lot of yoga. What a match, with 3/4 games decisive to start! Topalov played the routine 22..Rad8 very quickly, allowing the sac on h6. I'm sure computers will show very quickly if that was the losing blunder or if he could have saved himself after the sac. Looks very hard to do, so right now we can consider 22..Rad8 a catastrophic lapse in Topalov's sense of danger. Once again he shows himself to be an impatient defender against slow pressure. I wonder if Anand has Kramnik stashed in that van he drove from Frankfurt? 22..Nc5, heading to d3, runs into 23.Rc4! with similar threats to the game. 22..Rfd8 23.Ne5 Be8 is disgusting, as is 22..f6. But defending the Catalan well usually requires a level of passive groveling and that's just not in Topalov's DNA, bless him.
Anand leads 2.5-1.5 going into the rest day on Thursday.
Bonus analysis from mishanp in the comments: "Just for the record - a 2:2 draw on toilet visits today."

Anand - Topalov WCC 2010 - Game 4 Analysis

Three decisive games in the first four of a world championship match? Who needs drawing rules with such knock-out hungry players? In a second Catalan, with a nothing special novelty, Anand decided it was an eye-for-an-eye when he dropped a knight onto Topalov's king to quickly achieve a spectacular victory of his own.

What happened in the fourth game today was very, very similar to what we saw on Saturday, in the very first game. Almost right out of the opening White sacrificed a knight and got a deadly attack. That was it. And the speed with which Anand played a few not too natural moves, for instance 22.Ng4 and 29.Rc2, or even the knight sac itself (only five minutes thinking!) sort of suggests that this game may have been very deep preparation too. In any case, it’s a big blow for Topalov, who started with a lead but now looks at a 1.5-2.5 score for Anand going into the second rest day. Winning the next game could be quite important for the Bulgarian, having to play with the black pieces twice after that . Anyway here is the full analysis of the game 4.

Here are some pics from the playing hall...

Anand vs. Topalov WCh Game 4: Prediction Time

By Dennis Monokroussos

anand thinking
This prediction business is fun, and a good skill to develop when preparing for one's own opponents. So, chess fans, what do you expect for game 4? If my and just about everyone else's analysis is correct, Anand achieved absolutely nothing - less than nothing, really - from the opening of game 2, at least from an objective point of view. On the other hand, Topalov was asea with respect to his handling of the position he got from the opening. So while I don't think Anand would repeat everything up to and including 15.Qa3, it wouldn't surprise me too much if he went for a different sub-variation in the Catalan, until Topalov proved he could handle the resulting middlegames.
On the other hand, Anand was probably fine, objectively speaking, in game 1, but he switched to a different opening in game 3. So one might expect a sort of hit-and-run strategy, aiming to give Team Topalov as many new analytical projects as possible to stretch them thin, maybe picking his spots for later in the match.
Overall, though, I think he'll stick with what has worked so far, and unless the Catalan was a bit of one-time only propaganda I think he'll keep needling Topalov with it until the latter proves it's a waste of time. In its favor are the following: (1) past success, (2) positions that aren't especially suited to Topalov's greatest strengths (which isn't to say that he's helpless, only that it's relatively low-risk), and (3) it continues the psychological head games involved in playing Kramnik's pet openings.
But what do you think?

Anand holds Topalov

By Ian Rogers

draw in game 3
The World chess championship match between Viswanathan Anand and Veselin Topalov remains tied after the third game ended in an uneventful draw here on Tuesday.
Topalov, playing with white and thus the first move, was looking for a reprise of his crushing win in game one, but Anand switched opening systems and set about neutralizing all Topalov's efforts to take the initiative.

Pawn advance

On the 25th move, Anand surprisingly allowed a Topalov pawn advance, but his position remained solid enough to hold the position with few problems.
“At one moment the position was quite dangerous,” said Anand, “but I think I defended well.”
Topalov agreed: “I (believe) I had an advantage but I misplayed it and he was able to equalize.”
Topalov had declared before the match that he would not talk to his opponent and as a result the players repeated three different positions three times before, after 46 moves and almost four hours of play, Topalov approached the chief arbiter, Panagiotis Nikolopoulos, and asked him to offer a draw on his behalf to Anand.
Anand accepted the proposal but, in a sign that relations between the two players may be deteriorating, neither player made a move to shake hands, the traditional way to finish a game.
“I just forgot,” was Topalov's explanation at the post-game press conference while Anand joked “Maybe the arbiter (is the one who) has to shake hands!”
After Tuesday's third game Anand's match strategy is becoming clearer.
For the second consecutive game, Anand has exchanged queens early, removing the most dangerous attacking piece from the board.
Topalov, one of the modern era's greatest attacking Grandmasters, has then been forced into a manoeuvring game where he has so far failed to trouble Anand.
Fewer than 100 paying spectators attended Tuesday's game, the first to be played on a weekday, but the official match website has been recording record numbers, with close to half-a-million visitorswatching the second game.
The first draw in the match to date leaves the score tied at 1.5-1.5 with nine games remaining. With €1.2 going to the first players to reach 6.5 points, Anand will be hoping for a second win when he makes the opening move in the fourth game on Wednesday at 5.30 p.m. IST.

Anand holds Topalov with black in third game of World Championship

Viswanathan Anand
SOFIA (Bulgaria): World Champion Viswanthan Anand played out a draw with challenger Veselin Topalov of Bulgaria in the third game of the world chess championship.

After two full bloodied games, Anand went for a Slav defense with black pieces which turned out to be a big contrast to his opening choice in the first game wherein the Indian ace had chosen the ultra sharp Grunfeld defense.

Topalov apparently had been expecting the Slav but possibly not the variation that Anand chose, as it was a choice popularised by Russian Vladimir Kramnik, a rival of both Topalov and Anand in the last two world championship matches.

The game started on a sedate note, a complete opposite of the first two games when both players went on rampage with white pieces. It may be recalled that Topalov had won the first game in very quick time showcasing his deep preparation in the middle game arising out of a Grunfeld and Anand had bounced back with a very convincing victory in the second game of the 12-games match.

Instead of walking in to what Topalov's excels at, Anand aimed at getting a decent position after the opening and then equalising and see if an opportunity would come his way. This tactic worked fine and a draw with black means that the Indian has a slight upper hand in the match as he has more games with white pieces remaining.

As things turned out in one of the popular variations, the queens got traded very early giving Topalov an optical space advantage which lasted for quite some time but did not materialise in to a real advantage.

Anand's 14th move solved his opening problems and black could develop his pieces harmoniously after nearly making a half move aimed at supporting weaknesses on the king side.

On his 20th turn, Topalov offered Anand a pawn which would have led to unclear complications and possibilities of the Bulgaria coming on top. Anand rejected the pawn offer in no time and concentrated on following the basics which proved enough to hold the balance.

Further exchanges forced the game in to a rook and minor piece endgame wherein the result of the game was clear by the 33rd move when Anand forcibly entered a pure rook ending. 13 moves later the draw was signed through repetition of moves.

Interestingly, the observers were a bit surprised to see a lengthy 46 moves game when the outcome was clear to the naked eye many moves before. The reason for that was the fact that Topalov was following 'Sofia rules' according to which the draw can be agreed only through repetition or in consultation with the arbiter.

To sum it up, the players are not allowed to offer draws. Anand apparently, did not agree to this proposal and Topalov and his manager Silvio Danailov had gone on record saying that Topalov will neither offer nor agree to draws during the match.

Anand had proved vulnerable in the first game but the course of the match since then has shown that the World champion has steely nerves to back his fantastic preparation. The onus is on Topalov now who will have to save himself as black in the fourth game.

No handshake in Anand - Topalov Game 3

News from the playing hall in Sofia

anand topalov
Audience in the playing hall of the match Anand - Topalov saw a normal start of round 3 with a full house of journalists and many interested chess fans ready for a battle. The game entered into a well known Slav variation, where white plays with slight advantage and black can draw with precise moves (replay game here). Exactly this led to theoretical discussion not on the board, but rather on the rules of the World Chess Championship.
Before the start of the match, Topalov said that he will play the match according to the Sofia rules, despite the fact they are not official part of the regulations. Anand answered him during the press conference saying, "I have come to Sofia not to play Sofia rules, but World Chess Championship rules."
After the bishops were exchanged at move 33, the game entered a dead draw position. Topalov and Anand kept on playing. After the time control on move 41, Topalov went to get the arbiter and according to the audience in the playing hall seemingly requested a draw. The arbiter went to the board, but Anand did not look at him and executed his next move, thus continuing the game. The arbiter stayed until the threefold repetition.
Observers from the hall confirm there was no handshake at the end of the game.
Update:
Chessdom.com journalists and the players themselves confirmed there was no handshake after the game.
Update 2: The players at the press conference said they simply forgot to shake hands at the end of the game.

Anand - Topalov WCC 2010 - Game 3 Analysis

Anand and Topalov playing

Chess fans were waiting to see what Anand would play after the disaster in game one. Would he repeat the Gruenfeld with some devastating novelty, or would he switch gears? The answer was a rock solid Slav, leaving it up to Topalov to show what he had in store against it. The Bulgarian was unable to crack it, and Anand’s setup was never in any real danger.

At the press conference Topalov had Antoaneta Stefanova sitting next to him, for doing Spanish translations. Both of them stated that “it’s in the regulations” that one can’t offer a draw directly, but only through the arbiter. But this is not true; the official World Championship regulations don’t mention the draw offer at all.

Don’t miss today’s press conference, which I’ll put up in a few hours. It’s clearly the best so far. Also a video analysis of game will be posted shortly. For now here is the full analysis of the Anand - Topalov WCC 2010 Game 3. Hope that you enjoyed our live coverage of the game 3. Don't forget to join us tomorrow.
