ChessBase Magazine starts into 2010 with three very different tournament highlights. The FIDE World Cup in Khanty-Mansiysk was once more carried out as a massive KO tournament with 128 participants and saw in Boris Gelfand a victor who threw into the scales against his rivals, who were almost all younger, his experience and strong nerves. The London Chess Classic consisted of an all-play-all with the 3-point rule and saw a neck to neck race between Magnus Carlsen and Vladimir Kramnik. The world's new number one managed to decide the tournament in his favour. And in Bursa in Turkey, Russia managed, despite an early slip-up, to defend its title as World Team Champions ahead of the USA which had been leading in the meantime.
The match of the year between World Champion Vishy Anand and his challenger Veselin Topalov went the full distance, i.e. 12 tournament games, and yet at the end the decision was quite unexpected and came much more quickly than one might have thought. On the DVD of ChessBase Magazine 136 you will find all the games with extensive annotations. Other high points of the last weeks and months have been the European Championships for both men and women. In those there were victories on the one hand for youthful creativity and on the other for experience and serenity. Au revoir, Amber! The 20th and last edition of this classic tournament with its blindfold and rapid chess games, won this year by Levon Aronian, constitutes one of the main themes of this issue. On the DVD there is commentary, e.g., by Magnus Carlsen on his victory over the world champion, and Vugar Gashimov explains the subtleties of his attacking win over Vladimir Kramnik. The Scotch Game (1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.d4) is a lively alternative to the Ruy Lopez which has found favour amongst many leading Grandmasters. The top experts in the Scotch include former World Champion Garry Kasparov as well as Alexander Morozevich, Sergei Rublevsky and others. The space White takes early in the game can easily translate into a powerful attack against Black’s king. In addition to this White can often usually some damage on Black’s pawn structure by capturing Black’s knight on c6. These dual aims have certainly been giving Black plenty to think about.
