For many years, the tournament year has begun with a chess double act. The Corus Tournament in Wijk, perhaps the best that the international tournament scene has to offer, is rapidly followed by the “intercontinental” event Morelia/Linares. The traditional tournament in Linares enjoyed the title of the “Wimbledon of chess”, but a few years ago ran into a period of drought with less exciting tournaments. The double round super tournament which has been played for 10 years soon got over that and moved its first round to Mexico. So all that is now water under the bridge. The journey from Morelia to Linares between the first and second series of rounds is however particularly demanding for the players. Not everyone is able to cope in the same way with that hassle, and perhaps in the second series the play of some has too often been a bit lacklustre. Others, on the other hand really come into bloom only when they reach Spain. This year the tournament produced a remarkably high number of entertaining games at the very highest level. Several of these world class players have felt called to annotate their masterpieces for the readers of ChessBase Magazine. Several other top class tournaments were being played in parallel to the tournament for super grandmasters. In the analyses in this issue of the magazine you will find above all the Aeroflot Open in Moscow – not quite such a strong field as previously - and the German Bundesliga. Amongst the openings surveyed, it is the Alekhine Defence which has attracted the greatest attention from the theoreticians, but see for yourself ...

Foros and the Dortmund Chess Festival are the outstanding tournaments of this issue of ChessBase Magazine. Whereas in Foros in the Ukraine, the young star Magnus Carlsen progressed smoothly from start to finish with his final victory never in danger, in Dortmund the tension was high for a long period and it looked like a sensation was in the making. However, in the last but one round Peter Leko wrested the lead from Jan Gustafsson and held on to it until the end. In the shape of Carlsen, Karjakin, Eljanov, van Wely and Nisipeanu, we have five of the participants from Foros taking a look back at some selected games and explaining to you the decisive ideas and moments. For the first time, Jan Gustafsson has sat in front of the camera and recorded in Fritztrainer format his convincing victory over Arkadij Naiditsch.

Who would have thought it? The WCh match between Vishy Anand and Vladimir Kramnik was such a one-sided affair as has not been known in the title matches of the last decade. Anand’s 3:0 at the half-way point was too sobering for the challenger to even think that he might turn things around. The WCh match in Bonn is of course the big story in this issue. The World Champion in person has annotated for you his 3rd and 5th game victories in Fritztrainer format (audio only, in English). In addition GM Rogozenco provides in-depth analysis on all the important games from the World Championship in video format. Concurrently with the WCh, the top European Team Championship was taking place. Apart from the WCh finalists and Topalov, once more the whole world élite was there in the starting blocks for this top event. Teimour Radjabov, Pavel Eljanov and the young Russian GM Nikita Vitiugov annotate some of their games from the championships on the DVD and in doing so discuss, e.g., a whole range of interesting opening ideas.

At the end of the super-tournament in Wijk an Zee two young heroes were in the spotlight: with a little bit of luck Magnus Carlsen won the top tournament, and at the age of only 15, Anish Giri was victorious in the B-tournament and thus qualified for the tournament for the top players for next year. On this DVD there are comments on their best games from, e.g., tournament victor Carlsen, Vladimir Kramnik, Vishy Anand, Alexei Shirov and Nigel Short. Whereas world champion Anand usually mostly went in controlled fashion with the flow in Wijk, his challenger for the WCh, Veselin Topalov, went about things in his usual combative way in Linares and majestically won the second great tournament highlight of this issue despite a lapse in the last round but one. On the DVD you will find all the games from these world class tournaments, more than 4 hours of video analysis (e.g. by Shirov and Short about Wijk), 13 up-to-date openings articles with suggestions for your repertoire as well as training contributions in tactics, the middlegame and the endgame.
